Parents Say Boy Attacked by Cougar

A 5-year-old boy was attacked and dragged off a hiking trail in the Sandia Mountains of New Mexico before the boy's father jumped on the animal and scared it off.

Both the boy and the father identified the animal as a mountain lion when showed photos by a New Mexico Department of Game and Fish investigating officer.

The attack happened about 7:30 p.m., May 17. The animal grabbed the boy and dragged him into into the forest. The father, followed the animal into the brush and jumped on it, forcing it to drop the boy.

The boy was airlifted to University of New Mexico Hospital where he was listed in satisfactory condition.

The U.S. Forest Service has closed the Balsam Glade Nature Trail and the Game and Fish has searched the area with tracking dogs without luck.
