Guide Accused of Robbing Bank
Boy, this one hit close to home.
I just read about a fishing guide on the San Juan River in New Mexico who has been arrested and charged in connection with a bank robbery in Colorado.
The guide, Jude Duran, lived a few miles from where I used to live and guided on the area's top trout stream. In fact, it's one of the top trout streams in the country.
Not real sure what this is all about, but a story in the Santa Fe New Mexican says Duran, 29, is a well-liked guide who had developed a good following of clients.
Duran is accused of robbing the Vectra Bank in Montrose, Colo., with a handgun.
Read the New Mexican's story here.

Parents Say Boy Attacked by Cougar
A 5-year-old boy was attacked and dragged off a hiking trail in the Sandia Mountains of New Mexico before the boy's father jumped on the animal and scared it off.
Both the boy and the father identified the animal as a mountain lion when showed photos by a New Mexico Department of Game and Fish investigating officer.
The attack happened about 7:30 p.m., May 17. The animal grabbed the boy and dragged him into into the forest. The father, followed the animal into the brush and jumped on it, forcing it to drop the boy.
The boy was airlifted to University of New Mexico Hospital where he was listed in satisfactory condition.
The U.S. Forest Service has closed the Balsam Glade Nature Trail and the Game and Fish has searched the area with tracking dogs without luck.

My Web Site Updated
I am finally getting some work done on my Web site.
You can now find my columns on the Web site at: http://www.darrenmarcy.com/ by clicking on the OutdoorsVT link at the top.
I also added some new clips to those that were already there.
Don't miss the story on trophy trout in Vermont, or the information about two fishing books -- Lou Ureneck's stunning read about a trip to Alaska with his son, as well as John Gierach's latest.
You can still find the OutdoorsVT columns on the Rutland Herald site, but this gives you another option if you're looking for one you missed.

There's a nasty chemical called BPA that may, or may not, be entering your body from your hard plastic sports bottle. Sports bottle maker Nalgene has been hit hard by the news. Here's a column about the alleged dangers and the fact that alternatives, including a new bottle by SIGG, are taking off as consumers have demanded something different.
